Course – Tibetan Yoga and Tibetan Medicine

with Saadet Arslan and Elio Guarisco

20-22 September in Dargyäling, Cologne

Course content:

Our life unfolds as body, energy, and mind. Energy, known as prana or qi in the ancient yoga and medical systems, acts as the bridge between body and mind. Balancing our energy is thus crucial for a healthy life. Yantra Yoga is a specific method to preserve and reestablish the natural condition of our energy as the basis for harmony of body and mind. It helps us become aware of the subtle energetic level of our existence and understand how our state of mind, behaviour, and diet affects our energy and consequently the quality of our life.

This course explores the ancient knowledge of Tibetan traditional medicine in conjunction with the practice of Yantra Yoga and gives participants the tools to start applying the principles of both in their daily lives.

The sessions on Tibetan medicine, led by Elio Guarisco, are open to all participants in the morning session. The afternoon session with Elio Guarisco (from 16:00 to 17:30) is restricted to practitioners from the Dzogchen Community who have received transmission from Chögyal Namkhai Norbu or Khyentse Yeshe.

In the Yantra Yoga sessions, participants will be divided into two groups, one for learning the fundamental principles of this ancient discipline and the other for continuing to learn the Yantras in greater depth as well as the related pranayamas.

Elio Guarisco: was born in Italy and studied art and Buddhism in India, later moving to Switzerland, where for 10 years he learned Tibetan language and Buddhist philosophy under one of the Dalai Lama’s philosophical advisers.

He joined the Dzogchen Community in 1986 after receiving teachings from Chögyal Namkhai Norbu for the first time, and developed a keen interest in Tibetan medicine and its relationship to the Dzogchen teachings. Elio has worked on various translations for the Shang Shung Institute in Italy, including several books by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu relating to Tibetan medicine.

Through his work as a translator for several eminent Tibetan masters, including His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, and as the organiser of numerous seminars, meditation courses and conferences, Elio has contributed greatly to the introduction of Buddhism to Italy in particular and to the West in general.

Saadet Arslan: has practised Yantra Yoga since 1994. She is an authorised instructor and has been teaching Yantra Yoga since 2008, primarily in Germany. She holds a master’s degree in Tibetan Studies from Bonn University, and is currently living and working in Bonn as a Tibetologist.
