EARTHQUAKE IN NEPAL
The devastating earthquake of 7.9 magnitude that hit Nepal on Saturday 25th April caused thousands of victims, currently more than 5000, but there is fear that they will double.
The assessed number of displaced people is around 1 million.
ASIA works in Nepal since 1996 employing both international and local staff, that is already planning a first aid intervention. Our workers say that the situation is tragic: the old buildings and the poor sheds collapsed, water is missing and internet and the telephone lines are interrupted. In Northern Kathmandu area, close to the epicenter, destruction is massive: in Rasuwa village the 98% of the buildings fell down after the violent shakes.
Health situation is critic: water-borne disease, such as cholera, started spreading among local population and the hospitals are already out of capacity. It’s a fight against time: to contain the epidemics we must distribute water filters, shelters and blankets for all the people sleeping in the streets.
We need funds to cope with this tragic humanitarian emergency.
